Shanta Owens and Shera Grant are the first twins to serve together on the bench in Alabama. Shanta runs a drug court. “I get an opportunity to really help a lot of people who are afflicted with drug addiction,” she said. Shera oversees civil matters. “I run something that’s similar to, like, the ‘People’s Court,”’ she said. The two were only 5 when their father died, and their mother, a librarian, was a very strict but loving parent. The girls were constantly told they had to read, they said.
